Differences between stainless steel and carbon steel materials

Stainless steel 304 and carbon steel are two common metal materials. They are significantly different in terms of composition, properties, and uses. The following is the main comparison between the two:

1.Composition

Stainless steel:
Main components: iron (Fe), chromium (Cr, about 18%), nickel (Ni, about 8%), and a small amount of carbon (C, ≤ 0.08%).

Carbon steel:
Main components: iron (Fe) and carbon (C, usually 0.05%-1.5%), may contain small amounts of manganese (Mn), silicon (Si) and other element

2.Corrosion resistance

    Stainless steel:
Due to the presence of chromium and nickel, a dense protective film of chromium oxide is formed on the surface, which provides excellent corrosion resistance to water, air, acids, alkalis and other media. The following picture shows a double cone mixer made of all stainless steel.

    Carbon steel:
Lack of chromium and nickel, easy to react with water and oxygen to generate rust (iron oxide), poor corrosion resistance, usually need surface treatment (such as galvanized, spray paint) to prevent rust.

    3.Strength and hardness

    Stainless Steel:
Lower strength and moderate hardness, but good toughness and ductility, easy to process and mold.

    Carbon Steel:
Higher strength and hardness, especially high carbon steel, but poor toughness and ductility, easily brittle.

    4.Magnetic

    Stainless Steel:
Normally non-magnetic (austenitic structure), but may exhibit weak magnetism after cold working.

    Carbon Steel:
Magnetic and easily attracted to magnets.

    5.Processing performance

    Stainless steel:
Higher machining difficulty, especially easy to stick knife when cutting, need special tools and technology.
Welding performance is good, no special treatment is needed after welding.

    Carbon Steel:
Good machinability, easy to cut, forge and weld.
However, you need heat treatment after welding to eliminate stress.

    6.Appearance

    Stainless steel:
Smooth surface, with silver-white metallic luster, not easy to change color, commonly used for decorative purposes.

    Carbon Steel:
Relatively rough surface, easy to rust, usually need surface treatment (e.g. painting, plating) to improve the appearance.

    7.Cost

    Stainless Steel:
Higher cost due to nickel and chromium content.

    Carbon Steel:
Lower cost and an affordable material.

By selecting the right material for the specific need, performance and cost requirements can be better met.
